Lieutenant General Joe Nickell served as the Adjutant General of Kansas for more than 21 years, culminating an illustrious profession as state legislator, lawyer, newspaperman, radio commentator, photographer, historian and soldier. He was appointed Adjutant General on October 1, 1917 as served in that place until January 27, 1919. BG Huffman served as Lt. Governor of the State of Kansas from 1919 to 1923. Doctor Huffman was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee within the Senate when the appropriation for that constructing was made. He concerned himself with each phase of its development from the time the original appropriation was handed till the hall was opened for the public use. The feature of the constructing which greater than some other makes it distinctive among the many public structures of Topeka, is the gorgeous white marble employed on a generous scale both inside and outside.
His father was coal merchant at Brownsville, and both parents had been active, helpful members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1870, he served as Mayor of Topeka the place he strongly fought in opposition to liquor promoting and gambling. In 1873, he was elected as a republican to the Kansas House of Representatives and served three terms. After leaving office he continued his fight for a constitutional prohibition of alcohol. Numerous occasions he was threatened to depart the state or he can be hanged, but he saved pursuing his actions towards slavery. Because of those actions, pro-slavery forces plundered his house and destroyed his items. On May thirteen, 1855, he assisted in organizing the primary “Sabbath-faculty” in Kansas .
As a member of the first Battalion, 137th Infantry, COL Baker rose to the rank of Major, serving because the Battalion S-3. In May 1968, the 137th was activated for Vietnam as part of the 69th Infantry Brigade in Fort Carson, Colorado.
It was during High School he enlisted within the First Kansas Infantry of the Kansas National Guard. In 1915 he was discharged as an enlisted member and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. He was raised southwest of Dodge City in Copeland, Kansas, and moved with his family to Grand Junction, Colorado where he graduated highschool and joined the Colorado National Guard in January 1960. He moved again to Kansas and transferred to Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, Dodge City in 1962. After a brief interval of one year and fifteen days, he reenlisted in the National Guard and served because the Assistant Operations Sergeant. On 31 July 1972, he assumed the duties as the complete-time Operations, Training, and Readiness Specialist with the 3rd Battalion, 137th Infantry Battalion. The 195th Field Artillery Group was re-designated and reorganized on 1 May 1959 as the 195th Engineer Group.
